Local farm uses new technology to protect plants from cold
MANATEE COUNTY - With Thursday, Feb. 5th. night's cold weather, a Manatee County fruit farm is trying out some new technology to protect their investment.

When it comes to covering your plants from freezing temperatures, it can be a real hassle. But now you can forget about the blankets.

"We have quite a big investment in our plants here in our garden area and our pavilion area." As the sun gets ready to set, the temperatures start to drop as well. And at Mixon Fruit Farms, workers are preparing for the cold night ahead.

They're using a machine called Jack Frost that whips up a protective foam for protection.

Mixon Fruit Farms Celebrates 70 Years of Making Memories
It started in 1939 with 20 acres and a little fruit stand in front of Mixon's. Many changes have happened in the past 70 years.
Mixon's was one of the first gift fruit shippers in Florida. The Mixon family has been innovative in the citrus industry. Bill and Dean Mixon have made many citrus industry improvements that have been used all over the State.

TOP HONORS
BRADENTON — Five local companies received top honors Wednesday from the Manatee County Economic Development Council.

The Industry of the Year award winners were Gould & Lamb, LLC, a national Medicare service provider, and Galati Yacht Sales, one of the nation’s top boat dealers.

The Exporting Excellence award went to MyUS.com, an Internet packaging and mail forwarding company; honored for Workforce Initiative was Mixon Fruit Farms; and recognized for Innovation and Technology was Robrady design, an industrial and mechanical design firm.

Despite the grim economy, EDC Chairman Jim Vett said the 18 companies nominated for the awards were examples of success in terms of their growth, sales and employee retention.

Made for TV: Mixon Farms to get worldwide exposure on cable show (Show aired November 2007)
MANATEE --The newly constructed gardens at Mixon Fruit Farms, with a waterfall and adjacent wedding and banquet facilities, were captured on film Wednesday by iLifeTV, a cable network with 10 million subscribers.

The TV crew, based in Destin, filmed the historic citrus grove for a half-hour program scheduled to run in October.

When Dean and Janet Mixon took sole command of the family’s citrus farm last year, they vowed to transition it from strictly an orange grove to a destination.

Their dream came to fruition that last week when a crew from the “Eye on Gardening” television show spent more than six hours shooting footage, conducting interviews and touring Mixon Fruit Farms. Host Tim Alan said the Bradenton hot spot definitely deserves the international exposure.
